Botox Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox is a purified, medical-grade form of botulinum toxin that’s used to treat facial wrinkles and folds. When Botox is injected, it blocks the nerve signals that trigger muscle contraction. When the targeted muscles relax, the wrinkles and folds caused by those muscles are significantly reduced.

What types of facial wrinkles are treated by Botox?

Two types of wrinkles develop over time. One type, static wrinkles, are caused by age-related changes in your skin. For example, your skin becomes dehydrated and thinner, and it produces less collagen and elastin. Sun damage further accelerates these changes, leading to wrinkles.

The second type, called dynamic wrinkles, develops from repetitive muscle movements. These wrinkles form as you constantly use certain muscles to make facial expressions, such as frowning.

Since Botox affects muscles, it treats dynamic wrinkles, effectively reducing:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Neck bands
  • The bunny line on your upper nose

Does Botox affect your natural expressions?

After treatment with Botox, you maintain your natural appearance, and you’ll still show facial expressions. Dr. Salkinder carefully injects small areas of specific muscles, leaving the majority of muscles free to move.

What should you expect during and after a Botox procedure?

Dr. Salkinder takes time to fully explain the procedure and answer your questions, so you’ll know what to expect. Most Botox sessions only take about 15 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

When your session is finished, the injection sites may be a little red, swollen, or bruised. These side effects don’t last long, however, and you can cover them with makeup. You won’t need to take downtime, but you should plan to wait a few hours before engaging in strenuous activities.

When will you see results?

You’ll see the difference in 24-48 hours, with results lasting up to four months.* Although Botox gradually wears off, you can get another injection as soon as your results fade. Many patients discover that their results last longer with they get frequent injections.

When you look in the mirror and see moderate-to-severe wrinkles, call Miracle Mile Aesthetics & ENT in Beverly Grove or book an appointment online to see the difference Botox makes.
